What is the most important thing about education.

  I had all my basic education in Brazil, and the educational system there is totally wrong. In that country, we have a division between public and private education, and usually, public education is very bad, except in a few schools with more investment. But why do I say it is bad? The product is that most public school students don't have a basic education well established. They are citizens with language communication problems and little knowledge about sciences and math. Most of them don't proceed to university. I was a high school teacher in a public school in Rio de Janeiro's State, in 5 years of teaching, I think that a maximum of 10 students went through university. Because public schools not being so good, they became the only place for poor people, only those who couldn't pay for a private school attended public schools. However, there is a contradiction: Brazil's best universities are public. The government focuses more on public universities than on schools. But who attends public universities? Most students that attended private schools, schools that mostly focus their high school to focus on subjects that will be in the public universities' entry tests. So high schools in private schools aren't also focused in educate their students! It is important for the schools that their students enter the university, there is a ranking of schools with more approved students in these universities. So if they get more ranking, more students will join the school. So from my point of view, the general basic education of the country is totally failed.

  Eu tive toda a minha educação básica no Brasil, e o sistema educacional lá é totalmente equivocado. Naquele país, temos uma divisão entre educação pública e privada, e geralmente, a educação pública é muito ruim, exceto em algumas escolas com mais investimento. Mas por que eu digo que é ruim? O resultado é que a maioria dos estudantes das escolas públicas não possui uma base educacional bem estabelecida. Eles são cidadãos com problemas de comunicação linguística e pouco conhecimento em ciências e matemática. A maioria deles não prossegue para a universidade. Eu fui professor do ensino médio em uma escola pública no estado do Rio de Janeiro, e em 5 anos de ensino, acredito que no máximo 10 estudantes tenham ingressado na universidade. Porque as escolas públicas não são tão boas, elas se tornaram o único lugar para as pessoas pobres, apenas aqueles que não podiam pagar por uma escola particular frequentavam as escolas públicas. No entanto, há uma contradição: as melhores universidades do Brasil são públicas. O governo dá mais foco às universidades públicas do que às escolas. Mas quem frequenta as universidades públicas? A maioria dos estudantes que frequentaram escolas particulares, escolas que geralmente direcionam seu ensino médio para se concentrar nas matérias que estarão nos exames de entrada das universidades públicas. Portanto, as escolas particulares também não estão focadas em educar seus alunos! É importante para as escolas que seus alunos entrem na universidade, existe um ranking de escolas com mais estudantes aprovados nessas universidades. Então, se elas tiverem um ranking mais alto, mais alunos entrarão na escola. Portanto, do meu ponto de vista, a educação básica em geral no país é um fracasso total.

Social disparity brings bad public school.

  I am a former private school student. I had the luck that my parents had money to invest in my education. The school that I attended was philanthropic. The interest about this school is that they never shut the door to any students, so there were students with lots of money, but you could have also different types of discounts. I am not from a rich family, I had a type of discount, but there were some people in there with less money than me but also people so, so much richer than me. In theory, is beautiful, people from different social classes together, but the reality is that the rich stayed with the rich, and the others, were...the others. So it was also a place with lots of bullying, and I hated that. Most of the bullying guys were rich and they weren't punished because their parents used to pay a lot of money to the school. So it was an unfair place. For me, school time was the worst time during my younghood. If were in Brazil, right now, I would consider a lot in putting my kids in a school like that. On top of that, I go back to the first paragraph, I would look for a school that was focused on education by itself and not on the ranking of students going to public universities. The most important thing to look at in a school is what type of education philosophy it brings to its students. That type of question for sure 90% of the parents don't ask.

  Eu sou um ex-aluno de escola particular. Tive a sorte de meus pais terem dinheiro para investir na minha educação. A escola que frequentei era filantrópica. O interessante sobre essa escola é que eles nunca fechavam as portas para nenhum aluno, então havia estudantes com muito dinheiro, mas também era possível obter diferentes tipos de descontos. Minha família não é rica, eu tinha um tipo de desconto, mas havia pessoas lá com menos dinheiro do que eu, assim como pessoas muito, muito mais ricas do que eu. Em teoria, é bonito, pessoas de diferentes classes sociais juntas, mas a realidade é que os ricos ficavam com os ricos, e os outros... eram os outros. Então também era um lugar com muito bullying, e eu odiava isso. A maioria dos valentões era rica e não era punida porque seus pais pagavam muito dinheiro para a escola. Então era um lugar injusto. Para mim, a época escolar foi a pior fase da minha juventude. Se estivesse no Brasil agora, consideraria muito colocar meus filhos em uma escola assim. Além disso, voltando ao primeiro parágrafo, eu procuraria uma escola que tivesse foco na educação em si e não no ranking dos alunos que vão para as universidades públicas. A coisa mais importante a se observar em uma escola é qual filosofia educacional ela oferece aos seus alunos. Esse tipo de pergunta com certeza 90% dos pais não fazem.

Bullying was terrible in my school days.

  Now I am in Canada, there is a different education system and better public education system than Brazil. My oldest daughter is in a public school, and I participate a lot in her education, and I am enjoying it a lot. I guess this is how a government focused on investing in public education and health is at least a winner. Of course, there are problems in education here, but at least basic education for growing as a thinker and world citizen is the best for everyone. Still, there are private schools here, mostly religious, so most people who are more focused on religion put their kids in there because of their specific religion. I believe that kids need to see every type of religion and culture so I think that public schools are better in this way, I love them to see diversity. I think my kids are going to have a better opportunity than me to live in the fairest education system.

  Agora estou no Canadá, onde há um sistema educacional diferente e um sistema de educação pública melhor do que o do Brasil. Minha filha mais velha está em uma escola pública, e eu participo muito da educação dela, estou gostando muito. Acredito que esse é o resultado de um governo focado em investir na educação pública e na saúde, pelo menos é um ganho. Claro, existem problemas na educação aqui, mas pelo menos a educação básica para se tornar um pensador e um cidadão global é a melhor para todos. Ainda existem escolas particulares aqui, principalmente religiosas, então a maioria das pessoas que estão mais focadas na religião colocam seus filhos nessas escolas por causa de sua religião específica. Eu acredito que as crianças precisam conhecer todos os tipos de religião e cultura, então acho que as escolas públicas são melhores nesse sentido, eu adoro ver a diversidade. Acredito que meus filhos terão melhores oportunidades do que eu para viver em um sistema educacional mais justo.
