The School for Good and Evil: a meh fantasy movie
Finally I got time to write about a movie, I have been very busy but I also watched lots of movies in the past days, mostly horror movies, so expect some horror movies in my next posts. I have been enjoying the community here in hive which gave me lots of tips to watch it, missed some movies that were worth to watch it. Well this movie "The school for good and evil" was one of Netflix's releases for Halloween. I watched the trailer and it was interesting, also the presence of Charlize Theron attracted me. Interesting that while some research about the movie I realized that the voice of the storyteller is made by Cate Blanchet. The movie has also Laurence Fishburne, I don't remember any other movie besides Matrix that he was in.
Fantasy movies always get me to watch them, such as Harry Potter. So I thought that it was a good idea, since the plot gets something from Harry Potter, like a school of magic feelings. However, for me the movie had some problems, I always hate when the movie tends to a end killing somebody important but then with a miracle it saves it. That's the case of the movie, I usually laugh about these dumb things, it is a magical movie, but come on! Sometimes you need to kill the main characters and the movie still ends well.
Another thing that I didn't like much about some characters that in my point of view had bad actors, the case of one of the main characters 'Sophie' . That role was very important for the movie, but the actress in my point of view looked forced to act in that role (Sophia Anne Caruso, which I have never heard about it). But in contrast , the 'Agatha' role played by ' Sofia Wylie' was interesting, a pretty and young actress and she was good, it looks like she was in some Disney's High School Musical series. Charlize Theron is a secondary character so it doesn't show as much in the movie.
The plot is interesting, it is a mix of fairy tales and normal people that falls into it. Agatha and Sophie are two young girls that by some destiny end into a school of magic, which is split into the good and evil parts. Sophie is a dreamer to be a princess, but a very individualist and selfish girl that ends up falling into the evil part of the school, while Agatha is a more realistic, but still with lots of compassion, girl and ends up in the Good half of the school for princesses. There is a villain in the story, since the founders of the school are two twins ( one good and one evil). And all the times the movie brings the debate what is really a good thing and what is a really evil. Agatha argument is that there isn't a pure evil since everyone has both inside you, a nice thing to debate and even to bring to young people like kids. Nowadays it is important in my point of view to educate kids with this vision, it is impossible to be a perfect princess like Ciderella etc, with only good things. Perfection doesn't exist in real world. However, the end they screw everything forcing a very happy ending, and also showing that Agatha prefers to give up of her love to stay with her friend the resurged as phoenix.
In conclusion, if the end was better it would give me a better experience, but it wasn't, it is a fun movie to watch with a partner, even if it is a young partner like a child, maybe not so young, since there are some violent scenes. Here is the trailer of the movie and thanks for reading it.
