I was still in my undergrad studies when Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was released. It even got an Oscar nomination. It was a documentary about climate change with some predictions and observations. Big critics of these predictions try to minimize the impact of that documentary with its failure in date predictions. In the movie, he states that the sea level would rise 20 feet. That isn't impossible, but for sure it would take perhaps centuries for that to happen. In addition, in other opportunities, he is criticized that by 2016 75% of Arctic ice would disappear. He was indeed alarming, but still, what he brought should be disregarded?

  Probably weather studies evolved a lot in the last 25 years enough to correct most of these alarming statements, maybe. But something that the documentary didn't get wrong is that the world's climate is really changing. Countries with temperatures rising every year that pass. Rio de Janeiro, my home city, for example, is getting impossible, the city is getting to temperatures above 50°C during summer with heat indexes reaching 60 °C. That is new for sure for the city! Before I moved to Canada, I couldn't even handle the 40s there! Imagine now with 50s?

  So am I safe from climate change consequences here in Alberta? Nope, I am not. We are getting more thunderstorms in Alberta. Last year, there was a very bad hailstorm in Calgary. My friend's car got totally damaged by big hail. His car looked like it had gone to a Rio slum and taken tons of gunshots! In addition, every year that passes we have less snow during the winter, which means less water for our rivers that sustain our crops during the warm weather.

  On top of that, wildfires. Wildfires are part of a natural process around here; it is part of a cycle in the forest to return nutrients to the soil and make new trees to come out periodically. However, despite of us having more powerful thunderstorms during summers, we are getting drier summers, and consequently, a greater chance of burning. We had a record of total area burned in the last years and it will continue to rise according to predictions. Every year, many cities need to be evacuated because of wildfires. Last year, the city of Jasper, by the Jasper National Park, had to be evacuated. This year, some other cities in the North of the Province also had the same problem.

  So everything displayed in that documentary is still happening, new records and everything is getting worse related to the climate. But people say that it is the natural course of our planet! It is partially right, indeed, especially the Sun cycle is making things bad, but we are accelerating a bit with our human impact. Maybe the world isn't going to end with flooding in the next 10-50 years, but for sure we will see things worse than they are today.

Era um documentário sobre mudanças climáticas com algumas previsões e observações. Grandes críticos dessas previsões tentam minimizar o impacto do documentário com sua falha em prever datas. No filme, ele afirma que o nível do mar subiria 6 metros. Isso não é impossível, mas certamente levaria séculos para que isso acontecesse. Além disso, em outras oportunidades, ele é criticado por dizer que até 2016 75% do gelo do Ártico desapareceria. Ele foi realmente alarmante, mas ainda assim, o que ele trouxe deve ser desconsiderado?

  Provavelmente os estudos meteorológicos evoluíram bastante nos últimos 25 anos, o suficiente para corrigir a maioria dessas afirmações alarmantes, talvez. Mas algo que o documentário não errou é que o clima mundial está realmente mudando. Países com temperaturas subindo a cada ano que passa. O Rio de Janeiro, minha cidade natal, por exemplo, está ficando impossível, a cidade está chegando a temperaturas acima de 50°C durante o verão, com índices de calor chegando a 60°C. Isso é novidade para a cidade! Antes de me mudar para o Canadá, eu não conseguia nem aguentar os 4°C lá! Imagine agora com 10°C?

  Então, estou a salvo das consequências das mudanças climáticas aqui em Alberta? Não, não estou. Estamos tendo mais tempestades em Alberta. No ano passado, houve uma tempestade de granizo muito forte em Calgary. O carro do meu amigo foi totalmente danificado por um grande granizo. O carro dele parecia ter ido a uma favela do Rio e levado toneladas de tiros! Além disso, a cada ano que passa, temos menos neve durante o inverno, o que significa menos água para os nossos rios que abastecem nossas plantações durante o clima quente.

  Além disso, incêndios florestais. Incêndios florestais são parte de um processo natural por aqui; faz parte de um ciclo na floresta para devolver nutrientes ao solo e fazer novas árvores brotarem periodicamente. No entanto, apesar de termos tempestades mais fortes durante o verão, estamos tendo verões mais secos e, consequentemente, uma maior probabilidade de incêndios. Tivemos um recorde de área total queimada nos últimos anos e esse número continuará aumentando, de acordo com as previsões. Todos os anos, muitas cidades precisam ser evacuadas por causa de incêndios florestais. No ano passado, a cidade de Jasper, próxima ao Parque Nacional de Jasper, teve que ser evacuada. Este ano, algumas outras cidades no norte da província também tiveram o mesmo problema.

  Então, tudo o que é mostrado naquele documentário ainda está acontecendo, novos recordes e tudo está piorando em relação ao clima. Mas as pessoas dizem que é o curso natural do nosso planeta! Em parte, isso está certo, de fato, especialmente o ciclo solar está piorando as coisas, mas estamos acelerando um pouco com o nosso impacto humano. Talvez o mundo não acabe com as inundações nos próximos 10 a 50 anos, mas com certeza veremos coisas piores do que as atuais.
