Summer activities in Coaldale, AB (Canada).

&emsp; Coaldale is well known for those who live in Lethbridge. It is considered almost as a suburb of our town since it is about 12 km from the Casino, which is the last important building before leaving Lethbridge going East through Highway AB-3 that connects Lethbridge to Medicine Hat, another medium-sized important city in Southern Alberta. It takes about 25 minutes from my home, which is located on the west side of the city. Because of that, people who prefer living in a small town, sometimes live there and work in Lethbridge. No big deal doing that. Wikipedia says that the city doesn't have even 10,000 people, but still, they have a good walk-in clinic which is a good option for Lethbridge people who don't want to wait in a long queue in the emergency at our only hospital in town. Last long weekend we decided to explore two activities around that region: The strawberry festival at Broxburn Vegetables and Cafe on Saturday and the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation on Monday.

&emsp; Coaldale é bem conhecida por aqueles que vivem em Lethbridge. É considerada quase como um subúrbio de nossa cidade, uma vez que fica a cerca de 12 km do Cassino, que é o último edifício importante antes de sair de Lethbridge indo para o leste pela Rodovia AB-3, que conecta Lethbridge a Medicine Hat, outra cidade de médio porte importante no sul de Alberta. Leva cerca de 25 minutos a partir da minha casa, que está localizada no lado oeste da cidade. Devido a isso, pessoas que preferem viver em uma cidade pequena às vezes moram lá e trabalham em Lethbridge. Não é grande coisa fazer isso. A Wikipedia diz que a cidade nem tem 10.000 habitantes, mas ainda assim eles têm uma boa clínica de atendimento sem marcação, o que é uma boa opção para as pessoas de Lethbridge que não querem esperar em uma longa fila na emergência do nosso único hospital na cidade. No último fim de semana prolongado, decidimos explorar duas atividades nesta região: o festival de morangos no Broxburn Vegetables and Cafe no sábado e a Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation na segunda-feira.

&emsp; Broxburn Vegetables and Cafe is a big place in which they have a small farm, a cafe and a small store to sell their produce. They have the only strawberry and raspberry u-pick event in this location. When I used to live in New Brunswick we used to have plenty of different choices of farms to go strawberry u-pick. But here we only have Broxburn. Since Summer is almost concluding, I guess they are in the last weeks of strawberry u-picking, so to bring people to pick the last strawberries they made this "Strawberry Festival". Someone said that the pancake breakfast was full, I didn't go because my daughter is lactose intolerant so we avoided some stress for the poor girl. Broxburn has also a nice playground and they added a bouncy castle on top of that for the kids during the festival. We got a total of 3 LB of strawberries in the u-picking, it was very sunny so in the middle, my wife and the kids decided to go back to a shade while I tried to do my best to fill our basket. When we finished, we went to the cafe to eat a good strawberry dessert with a refreshing strawberry lemonade. The strawberry cheesecake was sold out, just a pity. But there was a good strawberry cake and a strawberry mousse that we tried. After finishing eating there I went to their store to weigh my strawberries and buy some local tomatoes.

&emsp; O Broxburn Vegetables and Cafe é um lugar grande que possui uma pequena fazenda, um café e uma pequena loja para vender seus produtos. Eles têm o único evento de colheita de morangos e framboesas nesta localização. Quando eu costumava morar em New Brunswick, costumávamos ter muitas opções diferentes de fazendas para colher morangos. Mas aqui, só temos o Broxburn. Como o verão está quase terminando, acho que eles estão nas últimas semanas da colheita de morangos, então para atrair as pessoas para colher os últimos morangos, eles fizeram este "Festival do Morango". Alguém disse que o café da manhã com panquecas estava lotado, eu não fui porque minha filha é intolerante à lactose, então evitamos algum estresse para a pobre garota. O Broxburn também tem um parquinho agradável e eles adicionaram um castelo inflável para as crianças durante o festival. Conseguimos um total de 1,36 kg de morangos na colheita, estava muito ensolarado, então no meio, minha esposa e as crianças decidiram voltar para a sombra enquanto eu fazia o meu melhor para encher nossa cesta. Quando terminamos, fomos ao café para comer uma sobremesa de morango deliciosa com um refrescante limonada de morango. O cheesecake de morango estava esgotado, uma pena. Mas havia um bom bolo de morango e um mousse de morango que experimentamos. Depois de terminarmos de comer lá, fui à loja deles para pesar meus morangos e comprar alguns tomates locais.

&emsp; On Monday we had Labour Day in Canada and we decided to go to the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation. It was their last day of the season and we arrived a little bit after 2:30 PM that day, It was going to close. They are a nongovernmental organization to recover birds of prey that are hurt, such as hit by vehicles, or small birds that fall from the nests. They have many different birds, such as eagles, falcons, and owls. The institute has a big structure with many places where and many animals in there. We arrived for the last exhibition of the season, They have a small outdoor auditorium where they put some birds to fly. So for the last show, they decided to save it to release a recovered owl. It was beautiful to see that owl going back to the nature. Also, they demonstrated a bald eagle fly, she kept flying behind some chicken treats. After the show we visited some places where they keep the animals, They did a great job educating us about these amazing birds. We exited the place with a better understanding of what to do if we saw a hurt big bird like that, for example, they mentioned avoiding owl claws since they can hurt you very badly. In addition, we learned a lot about their habits and importance to the environment.

&emsp; Na segunda-feira, tivemos o Dia do Trabalho no Canadá e decidimos ir à Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation. Era o último dia da temporada e chegamos um pouco depois das 14h30 naquele dia, pois estava prestes a fechar. Eles são uma organização não governamental dedicada à recuperação de aves de rapina feridas, como aquelas atingidas por veículos ou pequenas aves que caem dos ninhos. Eles têm muitas aves diferentes, como águias, falcões e corujas. O instituto possui uma estrutura grande com muitos espaços e muitos animais lá dentro. Chegamos para a última exposição da temporada. Eles têm um pequeno auditório ao ar livre onde colocam algumas aves para voar. Portanto, para o último show, decidiram reservá-lo para soltar uma coruja recuperada. Foi lindo ver aquela coruja voltando à natureza. Além disso, eles demonstraram o voo de uma águia careca, que continuou voando atrás de alguns petiscos de frango. Após o show, visitamos alguns locais onde mantêm os animais. Eles fizeram um ótimo trabalho nos educando sobre essas incríveis aves. Saímos do local com uma compreensão melhor do que fazer se encontrássemos uma grande ave ferida, por exemplo, eles mencionaram evitar as garras das corujas, pois podem causar ferimentos graves. Além disso, aprendemos muito sobre seus hábitos e importância para o meio ambiente.
